The HMS Bounty's history stretches out longer than a gangplank. The setting of one of history's most infamous mutinies, stars ranging from Marlon Brando to Johnny Depp have graced its decks.
Widely known for the mutiny that Fletcher Christian led against Capt. William Bligh in Tahiti in 1789, the current model of the ship was commissioned by MGM Studios for the 1960 Brando vehicle "Mutiny on the Bounty." It was constructed using pictures and drawings of the original ship. The wheel was used in the 1935 Clark Gable "Mutiny" version. Mel Gibson and Errol Flynn also portrayed Christian in other movie versions.
In the 1980s, media mogul Ted Turner acquired the ship, as part of the deal in his purchase of the entire MGM library. Turner used the Bounty in 1990's "Treasure Island" (with Charlton Heston as Long John Silver, and a very young Christian Bale). It took another star turn in 2006, as the Edinburgh Trader in "Pirates of the Caribbean — Dead Man's Chest."
Turner eventually donated the ship to the Fall River Chamber Foundation, which kept it sitting in Heritage Park from 1993 until 2001, when the constant upkeep finally became too burdensome financially.
Tour tickets cost $10 per adult and $5 per children, with proceeds going to the continued support of the ship.
