An action-packed weekend is on tap for the city’s annual Day of Portugal celebration.
The 12th annual event begins on Thursday and will be held at the Gates of the City plaza on Ponta Delgada Boulevard. This is the fourth year the festival will be held at the replica of gates located in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores, a gift from the sister city.
The Day of Portugal is a worldwide event celebrated every June 10th. It is a national holiday in Portugal, commemorating the life of Luis Vaz de Camoes — Portugal’s greatest poet — and recognizes the valuable contributions of the many other Portuguese communities worldwide. According to Garcia, the festival has drawn as many as 10,000 people in year’s past.
On Thursday the festival kicks off at 6 p.m. with a Next Generation Night event hosted by Trio Restaurant. Tickets cost $25 and include entertainment by Eratoxica, D’Alma, DJ Island 9 and the Out of the Gutter Comedy Tour. Food and beverage are included with admission.
The festival takes a break on Friday before picking up again on Saturday. Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan will be joined by Portuguese Consul Graca Fonseca and Fernanda Costa, a educational leader in Portugal, for a ceremonial raising of the flags at 6 p.m. The band Santa Cecelia will play both the Portuguese and American national anthems during the ceremony. Later in the evening crowds will be entertained by performances from the Azorean Cultural Society, Santa Cecelia and Starlight, a band based out of Canada.
A new road race will kick off the festivities on Sunday. The Gates of the City 5K road race starts at 10 a.m. and begins and ends at the Gates. The race is sponsored by the Fall River Police Union. In the afternoon, crowds can enjoy various Portuguese delicacies like cacoila, chourico, linguica and favas and view various arts and crafts samplings. At 3:30 p.m., a folk group from the Portuguese Society Club in Pawtucket will take the stage. They will be followed by performances from “Young Fire”, Out of the Gutter Comedy and Marc Dennis.
