The Portuguese community is reaching out to earthquake victims in Haiti and that outreach comes not just from southeastern Massachusetts, but from California and from Portugal itself. A number of Portuguese-American artists will perform a concert for Haiti, a concert that will be heard and seen all over America and in Portugal.
Organizer Florindo Cabral said response to the concert, which will turn over money raised to the American Red Cross, has been tremendous. Cabral owns a production company in Fall River that produces news and a newsmagazine show called "Contacto" for the Portuguese RTP network.
The show will be carried live locally by the Portuguese Channel in New Bedford and will be broadcast locally on Channel 17 in Fall River.
“It will be broadcast all over the United States by satellite,” Cabral said. “Just about every Portuguese radio station in the country will carry it live,” he said. “It will be shown live in the Azores and in Portugal by SIC, Portuguese television.”
The concert will feature some very big names in entertainment, including Jorge Ferreira. Marc Dennis, Nelia, Mauricio Morais, D’Alma, Eratoxica and Chico Avila. Cabral said the show will be about 90 minutes in length.
Cabral said Millennium bcpbank will handle phone-in donations when the show is broadcast on television.
Credit card donations are also being accepted on the event’s Web site at www.fundraiserforhaiti.com. Transactions on the site are handled by PayPal.
